This book was great. I loved the refugee narrative, the kids stepping into the gap, the outsider/insider viewpoint from our American protagonist, and what that means for recognizing privilege in yourself even when you're marginalized. Such a powerful message.

I really enjoyed this book and despite some of the darker elements of the book I thought the story of two boys from very different worlds was very sweet. Each chapter from Max and Ahmed gave a little peek into their lives and to get a good perspective of their lives. This is a great read for younger readers and is a good illustration of terrorism, racism and fear but also hope and kindness and courage.

This book was an easy read but so full of heart. There was friendship and history, facts and adventure. I couldn’t help but read Max’s broken French that was written in English in French (in my head) which goes to show how on point the writing was. This book could have been preachy but it was handled well and came across and just empathetic in the best way.
