This was a really good story. I loved the insta love second chance vibe it gave off but it had a lot of depth to it and the characters were really awesome. The only thing from keeping me from loving it was it felt really long. Could have been shorter

Second chance romance.
Reason for initial break up is family meddling and both led to believe the other has moved on she the heroine goes off to study.
Hero is not a manwhore but briefly mentions he is with others during separation. Heroine is married, divorced and has a child.
No cheating.
Insta love when they reconnect.
HEA.
Catch up with secondary characters from previous books.

I loved Redeemed. With Annie and Jake's history, this could've been a huge angst-fest (which I wouldn't have opposed), but April approached their relationship from a place of forgiveness and maturity. They were able to act like adults and talk things out, instead of there being a constant stream of unsaid things and miscommunication which seems to be par the course for most romances with a similar plotline. Jake is such a softy; I kept getting heart eyes throughout the story. And Aiden is the freaking cutest!

I anxiously waited for this novel knowing that I would love it based on the author's teasers. Well, I really had no idea how much I would enjoy the story. Jake and Annie fell in love in high school. She went off to college and Jake stayed in Chicago trying to figure out what to do with his life. Her parents were able to manipulate them and they broke up. It is now 14 years later. Jake has never loved anyone since. Annie was married and is now divorced with a young son, Aiden. She's divorced because her husband, an addict, abused her and Aiden. McIntyre Security is hired to protect them. Jake takes on their protection. He an Annie are combustible. Clearly, neither got over the other. I loved that Jake, the strong silent type, was so willing to put himself out there for Annie. I loved that he called her Elliot. I loved that he was willing to put all the pain from the past behind them. He felt their second chance was a gift. Both of them accepted that gift without hesitation. Aiden definitely stole my heart. I also loved Charlie, the new bodyguard. I can't wait to get more stories in this series. I am definitely hooked.

Cute.

This was a really cute second chance romance with very low internal conflict compared to the usual conflict you get with the second chance romance trope. There is no pretense at Annie and Jake hating each other or being enemies at any point, and they have open and honest conversation early on in the romance about what happened 10 years previously eliminating the unnecessary communication misunderstanding element to your typical second chance romance. If not that domestic violence and child abuse were major themes of this romance, this would have been a breezy romance. But clearly with these themes and with regret from the past, there is a moderate amount of angst and emotion in this.

The premise is that Annie and Jake were high school sweethearts who were separated when they went on different paths after high school having vowed to stay together. Each under the misapprehension that the other betrayed their relationship, they try to move on. But years later, Annie needs the services of a bodyguard and Jake is assigned to her and the feelings are the same as they’ve always been.

I liked this even though I feel like it still has continuity issues and the story is a little basic and easily resolved. Nonetheless, this is an engaging read and that’s sometimes what’s truly important.
