3.5 - The middle book in the Tamír Triad unfortunately is just that - very much a middle book, and while it flows along nicely with Flewelling's quick compelling style, the plot - though there are great scenes - somehow manages to plod along and not develop very much. The last... 30% is quite excellent, and holds a lot of what we've been waiting for throughout, but it's too little too late - I honestly wish the invasion plot had started like... at the end of part 1. The setup for the final book is excellent, and I can't wait to read it, but this felt more like a transition than a strong story in its own right.

I think I liked this one even more than The Bone Doll's Twin! It was so good and the story crafting is epic. I'm a sucker for great world building and this series delivers.

And the ending? I'm on tinder-hooks! I just want to inhale the final volume in the Tamir Trilogy to see how it's all going to end, but alas I have to sleep. Hopefully I can start reading tomorrow.

Very enjoyable book. I can’t say how much I love how the “big reveals” just aren’t hammed up or overdone. I find that this happen with book where the author doesn’t seem to realise that the “big reveals” aren’t actually big reveals to anyone, much less the reader. Sure, plenty of characters are surprised, but given the fact that the prophecy of the returning queen was known and believed, even seen, by many, I loved how it all happened with such aplomb and matter-of-factness. There was no milking of this to try make the story or deans more interesting. It already IS interesting, and I think the author placed good trust in this fact and let everything play out in a very sensible and believable manner. This series is quickly becoming a favourite of mine.

3 1/2, maybe. It suffered from middle-book syndrome, where it felt like it was treading water until the big climatic moment at the end that sets up the final book. Definitely could have been tightened up. That said, I was really into the push-pull of the main character and his coming to grips with the fact that he was born a girl and will be (magically) changed back to a woman in order to fulfill a prophecy. Really looking forward to the last book.

Still a good book. Not as much suspense as the first one.

But the ending made up for that. Very 'epic' as in goosebumps atmosphere - the identity is finally revealed something we have been awaiting the whole book.

This trilogy has to be seen as one continous story as it picks up right where the first ends.
