When I was a kid I had two hand puppets that I would make little skits and stories with. One was Woodchuck, who was a woodchuck, and the other was Bob, a trumpeter swan. The fact that I came up with the character of Bob right after reading a book about trumpeter swans may or may not be a coincidence. In any case, this book is good.

My mom read this to us in school and we loved it. Although lesser known, it should definitely rank up there with Charlotte's Web.
