Well, I tried. I made it to 48% before deciding to end it. Couldn't even make it to 50%. Not even the audiobook could save this for me. Beautiful Exiles is not terrible, but there is not enough to keep me interested. Perhaps a true literary nerd would enjoy it more.

Meh

I typically read about a book every two weeks and this one took me twice as long to get through. It was well-written but it got boring and didn’t seem to really follow a story line in the second half. Just didn’t do it for me.

I am marking this read, but I gave up after the first quarter. I tried, but I could not handle obsessive use of obnoxious nicknames. It was increasingly frequent by the time I gave up. It made it unreadable for me.

Definitely written from Martha Gellhorn’s point of view and as a Hemingway fan was frustrating at times. Still a well written account of Martha’s struggle to be a journalist and wife to one of the greatest writers.

It takes a lot of guts to write a narrative by another writer in that writer's voice. I haven't read any of Martha Gellhorn's works to know if Clayton was successful or not, but for taking on the task, I admire her.

There were parts of this book that I really enjoyed, but the destructive, emotionally abusive relationship between Hemingway and Gellhorn made this a rather depressing read.

Interesting and well-rounded characterization of Martha Gellhorn, Ernest Hemingway, their friends and family, and their tumultuous relationship.

It took me a while to finish this book, I enjoyed the authors dynamic she portrayed with Gellhorn and Hemingway. I'm surprised I haven't read Gellhorns's books. After reading how Clayton portrayed Hemingway I'm almost sick to my stomach on how he treated women. My rating reflects my feelings on the overall theme and story of this novel it was choppy and wasn't something I was dying to read everyday nor finish.
