This book was heartwrenching. I have read this book before when I was about 10 or 11 and I vividly remember trying to be secretive so my siblings didnt look over my shoulder as there was swearing and the ‘gay?’ Scenes which was the main part I remembered. Now I have come to term with my queerness, I found the romance part of this even more engaging- my only criticism of it is that the chldren perhaps feel too young (12) and some scenes feel too adult or maybe that’s just my jealousy and lack of experience. It would of been nice to see more of how the queerness is accepted as I feel without this it may leave a negative impression and less hopeful perspective for young queer people who may read this.Â
On the parent asoect, this was the part that destroyed me, I understood that the mother wanted to get her child to understand what her life was like but I feel like this could have been achieved in a more constructive way. Furthermore at the end the mother’s mental illness was described very vaguely which was perhaps due to this story being told from a child’s perspective but i found it would have achieved more if this theme of mental illness was discussed further.Â
Overall, I believe that this book explored many themes but I question it being a book targeted towards children as it is like jaqueline wilson on steriods.Â
