This was a very long and somewhat complex book. It required a lot of concentration for me to follow who was what and what was the relationship between everyone, past and present. But I think that it must’ve been necessary, given it was the first book in a new series, and characters and backstories have to be established. In that, the author was successful, and I’m looking forward to the second book, wherever it comes out.

I’ve found fantasy books involving fairies are usually pretty raunchy (why are fae so horny? 😂). There were only a couple of sex scenes, and they were as explicit as expected.

Our protagonist is strong and fearsome, though I think her undoing will be her hardened heart. I hope she and Kaan make it in the end.

I really enjoyed this book, though it didn’t end up being 100% what I was expecting.

I love Kaan!

I am curious about a few things and characters, but I bet my questions will be answered in the next book.

I think the ending was the perfect mix of cliffhanger and satisfying, and I am very much looking forward to reading the second book when it’s released next year.

I was so excited when I first heard of this book and I saw so much potential. Unfortunately, it fell flat for me. Raeve came off as an attempt at Aelin in Heir of Fire and her actions throughout the book were so inconsistent. While I understood the fixation on killing Rekk, it made her so one dimensional.

The romance between
Raeve and Kaan
was extremely rushed and didn’t make any sense to me. One minute she’s trying to kill him and one minute she’s aching to get with him.

I frequently pictured Kaan as the Boulder from Avatar the Last Airbender. The descriptions of the male characters read as cartoonish and way overdone.

For a book involving dragons, we learned relatively little about them. They were not as central to the plot as I thought they would be.

The use of the glossary and
family tree at the end
seemed like a cop out, especially considering how wordy this author likes to be. The writing was difficult for me to follow at times, so I found myself skimming pages instead of actually reading them.

Excellent voice acting. Especially for the character "The Other". *chef's kiss. It's such a cool and unique fantasy world. Love the world building.

I will be picking up the sequel for sure. There were bits that I didn’t love and sometimes the MC really got on my nerves, but I do think she stayed true to her character arc even though I got frustrated with her at times. This book definitely is a gateway to an even bigger story, and has a lot of world building but I do think it was done pretty well. In the middle the pacing gets kind of weird but it does get better and it’s worth getting through that. I do wish the POVS were more evenly balanced but I think in the next book it’ll be easier to see from the other characters more. All in all, I would recommend this book!
