ok this book does a really good job of a) having good, realistic, likeable, complex characters and b) showing that character development isn't going from bad to good or good to perfect, but rather that mistakes are made and consequences dealt with and development actually has to develop. it shows something that's generally considered Bad being a very understandable, rational move for a character to do, connecting character and motive to consequence, which is especially cool given that it humanizes a black "criminal" teenage boy. also, the fact that ghost's father being absent is a thing, and is a big thing, but isn't THE thing is cool, because it once again takes a really shallow anti-black idea and exposes the depth and nuance that surrounds the situation instead of either pretending that single black motherhood/incarcerated black men and fathers aren't disproportionately prominent in the world or just playing into a stereotype. also, the way that aave is used for the dialogue AND narration is very cool, especially since some ppl consider it "improper" english and this is a published book. the reason for it being a 4.25 is that the plot is a little too simplistic imo, but good for elementary school readers i'd think

Hilarious!! I definitely was chuckling throughout this book. The storyline was overall good and even got a little deep towards the end. Looking forward to the next book in the series

Great middle school novel about a lot of things: handling your temper, finding common ground, being scared, supportive family... And being on a track team.

LOVE. Ghost is a really well-drawn character, with so much complexity and dimension. He makes lots of mistakes, but you can always see WHY he makes these mistakes, and he's still a likable character that readers will root for. I've generally come to expect this from Jason Reynolds, but it's still so impressive and refreshing every time I read one of his books.

Listened to this on audio. The narrator was amazing. So much excitement and expression in his voice. Even though the narrator is clearly an adult, the way he reads really gives the story a kid's voice.

Entertaining story of a middle school student who stumbles onto a track team and learns about himself and life in the process. That everyone has difficult episodes in their past, but we can't be governed by them. People will stick up for you, even when you don't think they will. Good messages for someone his age.
