A really enjoyable entry in the story of Fitz and the Fool. I laughed and cried. I'm both satisfied with the conclusion of this arc and excited to start the next part of Fitz's (and/or the Fool's) journey.

The ending to this book was so perfect that it almost makes me want to stop reading the series here so that it can't be changed. This might be my favourite book in the series so far.

This is fantasy at its absolute finest. There is the perfect balance between the epic, world altering events that serve as a backdrop to what is ultimately a very human story about a man and his trauma, and the ways it does (or does not) define him. Considering this isn’t a “love” story in the classic sense, the relationship between Fitz and the Fool is one of the strongest I have felt through the words on a page. Its unique formula is just one of the ways that makes every interaction between them fascinating, and the scenes with them both could have me smiling or sobbing on a dime (and oh BOY did I sob in this book).

Hobb writes character driven drama incredibly well. You get the sense that she knows every character in her world as well as she knows our narrator. I may get enraged and frustrated with the character’s behaviour sometimes (especially Fitz, you big dumbo), but to be fair, every action and decision makes sense in the wider context, and all leads to what is, in my opinion, a very satisfying conclusion to this trilogy.

With this entry, the Realm of the Elderlings has solidly gained its status as my favourite series (definitely for right now, maybe even of all time). I have 3 more books of Fitz and his Fool (plus another 4 of dragons), but frankly I’m scared to go on because I never want this series to end.
