Witty satire that skewers woke culture, performative allyship, perfunctory diversity initiatives, and well-meaning yet woefully ignorant white people. It’s simultaneously funny and unfunny, and appropriately cringeworthy. A notable detail included in the play is a series of racist and problematic skits between scenes. The skits range from offensive songs to dividing the class into two groups, pilgrims and Indians, “so the Indians can practice sharing.” FastHorse adapted these skits from actual lesson plans and Pinterest boards posted by teachers to share ideas for classroom Thanksgiving activities. Yikes.

Larissa FastHorse, this is one of the best plays I’ve read in a while. Thank you ♥️

A short play, about a small group trying to put on a school play for Thanksgiving that will acknowledge and honor the role of Native Americans. The four adults involved in creating and putting on the Thanksgiving Play are mostly well-meaning folk who want to be respectful but are very much getting in their own way.

In wrestling with the difficulty of Thanksgiving's past, and trying to portray it for kids, the intrepid theater crew vacillates wildly between honest portrayals, what's appropriate to show kids, and what's possible with a crew of entirely white people. The whole thing is painful, and also accurate.
