Cows by Matthew Stokoe

I started to read this book during my lunch break then quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to so this became my bedtime reading.
I just finished two decently sized books so I wanted a palate cleanser, something short and gross. I figured Cows was going to deal with animal abuse and there’s a pet dog in the story so you know something bad is going to happen to it.
I was surprised at how well articulated the book is. I love a good splatterpunk book but sometimes I feel like they are written like bad fan fiction. Cows I thought was well written and the gore wasn’t just there for shock value, it had a purpose (for the most part).
I was at 14% earlier today and managed in almost one session to finish the rest of Cows while my husband got a tattoo. It was a great afternoon read.

The fetus nailed to the wall made me literally laugh out loud in disgust 10/10

This was uhhh interesting. The beginning and middle had my jaw on the floor which is what I look for but towards the end of the middle and the actual end it was very lack luster.

I have only given this book 0.25 of a star, because zero wasn’t an option.

A friend of mine gave into curiosity and so did I - I’d seen so much on Instagram and TikTok about this that I just had to experience it for myself.

However, I absolutely hated this book, which is a rarity for me. The story itself was entirely ridiculous, beyond disgusting and I was so relieved when it was over.

Sure, the shock factor was crazy, my jaw hit the floor multiple times purely at how disgusting it was in places. But overall, it was poorly written, grim and had little to no actual point.

So all I’ve taken from this is the vivid and disturbing image of human beings eating actual sh*t for their dinner, the detailed and horrific abuse of cows and the resounding feeling of ‘what the f*ck have I just read’?

I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, and I’m not sorry about it.

Absolutely THE FUCK not.

You know, I really wanted to give this 1⭐️ but it was so absolutely depraved and disgusting that I gave it 2 for creativity and making me actually gag while reading. Throughout the book, I wanted to call a trusted adult to save me from the hell I put myself in but was too revolted to admit what I was reading.
Curiosity killed the....cow?

Don't say you weren't warned

Aye aye aye.

So this was really disgusting as promised. The first half of the book was A LOT. I enjoyed it more once we met the “urban cows”. All in all, I think this book took itself too seriously but I can see why it’s a staple in the extreme horror genre.

READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Also, I still love cows. Good boys.

It’s my fault for searching for the “most disturbing book ever”. It did deliver, but rating it any higher felt strange. Not for the faint of heart - should be prefaced with every trigger warning imaginable. Brb going to take a year-long shower.

It was an okay book. It had a lot of the "shock factor" stuff in the beginning but then got slow. There were more weird stuff as it went on, but most of the good parts, in my opinion, were at the beginning. Some of the writing seemed off to me and there were parts that I felt should've had comas, but I'm not an author so, I could be completely wrong. I did like the book, but I wouldn't read it again. If you're into reading some weird, fucked up shit, then I suggest this book. Otherwise, steer clear.

I feel like this was very much extreme horror for the sake of shocking and disgusting people? But there were also times where it was like there were some commentary about life and mental illness???? Like, im sure if i went through it again I'd find something profound about the book

The gore was good at times funny honestly I'd say this was very creative even. You hate to love it

I quite enjoyed it! In all of it's disgusting kind of maybe probably intellectual part of it! But it's definitely not for the faint of heart
