The chapters contained in this volume are the reason why Arlong Park is still so highly regarded today, even with over two decades of One Piece having been written since it was originally published. If Nami's backstory and
her asking for help
doesn't bring you to tears, this manga isn't for you.

➽ Volume 9 delves deep into Nami's background story! It definitely broke my heart to see her despair and how she's been trying to save her village for 8 years while working for the man who killed her mother. There's a big emphasis on found family, as Belle-Mere loved Nojiko and Nami so much and never cared that they weren't her biological children. They might have been barely scraping by, but there was so much love between them. That makes their fate all the more heartbreaking, as Arlong of course shows up and ruins everything 💔 I like that Luffy doesn't even care about Nami's story, he believes that she's his friend and of course shows up to help her in the end!

Volume 9 sets up a ton of character development for Nami, who has been quite mysterious in her motivations since she was first introduced. Eiichiro Oda continues to do a great job with character motivations and making you quickly feel for the characters. Nami's backstory and the events of this volume are heartbreaking. I'm excited to see how it gets resolved.
