Another good entry in the Saxon Stories. I reviewed plot summaries for the previous books before reading this one, and had only a few characters or references that I didn't pick up on. I like the continued relationships between Uhtred and Aethelfled, Arthur, and Ragnar. Edward is a nice addition to the cast of characters, and Skade was a fun (and scary) character.

The Saxon Stories continue to be consistently good reads into book 5. I don't know how he does it, but Cornwell can make every one of the numerous battle scenes somehow unique and exciting. I will say this was probably my least favorite of the books so far, as I think many of the characters were a bit less compelling than previous books- particularly Skade- but it was still a good, fast-paced read and I plan to continue on with the series.

My newest and most recent obsession is the adaption of the last kingdom and the books are also incredible. This one isn’t my favourite of those I have read, however, the characters are still interesting and the book is still very fast paced and gripping throughout.

I am completely hooked on this series, based on 9th century Saxon England. As usual, the principal character is fictional but the significant historical events are not. Nicely narrated by John Lee.
