I can definitely see why I liked this so much. It is funny and cute and light-hearted. As an adult some of the plot points for the lead characters a bit trivial, but the book isn't aimed at adults, so that doesn't effect the star rating.
While I enjoy a lot of the banter and adore the side characters immensely, I often found the reasons behind decisions, America's temper, and the miscommunication forced. She makes so many rediculous assumptions and often acts out. But I guess I was just as impulsive at 17.Â
I still find this story incredibly cute and one I look forward to keeping in my collection and sharing with friends in the future.
Moderate: Toxic relationship, Bullying, Classism, Domestic abuse, and Toxic friendship
Minor: Gun violence, Miscarriage, Physical abuse, Infertility, Grief, and Body shaming

America is looking at both Maxson and Aspen thinking both of them are good. Yeah, they are good. Then why the heck are you still looking at both of them, kissing both of them and longing for both of them. It's like cheating in a premium way. I don't like that at all.
And same goes with the Maxson. I hope someone will understand that "If you really love the first person, you wouldn't even think about the second one". What kind of stupid dating game is this? And yeah, you want to show the world how great person Maxson is by showing him forgiving everyone for their faults and all. I wonder if he does the same if he knows that America also goes back and forth with Aspen and Maxson.
Being a prince must be nice. You can have so many girls around you and experiment with them while saying it "finding the right one". Bleh. Bullshit.

This book… The first book of the selection series was pretty decent. It was easy to read and I didn’t have to focus so much.Â
This book is way worse in every possible way. It feels like I could’ve written this book when I was ten, I mean the Swedish translation was not iiiittt.Â
Here’s some things I wrote down while reading:Â
- Is she mentally ill?Â
- HOW CAN SHE STILL BE W ASPEN I HATE ASPEN
- why tf is she so stuck up in her attitudeÂ
- I hate Maxon, stupid and ugly nameÂ
- Is she dumb in her whole headÂ
- SHE IS AN ANTI HERO STUPID BITCH WHY DID IT TAKE HER SO LONG TO REALIZE THAT THE SELECTION IS WRONG AND THAT THE CAST SYSTEM IS BAD AND DUMB????Â
- aspen go to bed I don’t want you hereÂ
- SHE IS FUCKING CHEATING ON MAXON W ASPEN AND WHEN MAXON DOES SOMETHING W OTHER GIRLS SHE CANT FORGIVE HIM AND WONT TALK TO HIM??
- I feel so bad for Maxon Â
In conclusion it was a pretty bad book that just kept getting worse BUT I’m still going to read the whole series because I want to watch it when it comes out on Netflix. That’s the only thing that’s keeping me hooked.Â
The characters wasn’t likable at AAALLLLL💀💀 It is not a single person I like in this fucking book I despise everyone and everything. AndÂ
Maybe I’m too old for this book, maybe it’s meant for younger kids.Â

The first time I read this was in middle school and it’s so troubling to remember how much I internalized a male-apologist attitude. I had a love-hate relationship neither this book because I loved how intense it was but I hated America’s choices and just wanted her to do everything she could to find love regardless of her morals… so glad I’m not in that place any more.Â
Second Read: Â
America is an under appreciated epic badass. This series needs to be reprinted with new covers so that more people pick it up because it actually has some real depth alongside a sweet and silly story.Â
Moderate: Gaslighting, Torture, and Toxic relationship
