Hmm, more like 3,5 stars. I loved how some characters came to life, but others I didn't like. But its very much like rewatching the first season of Game of Thrones.

Boy am I glad I found this. I started watching the show around season two, then immediately inhaled the novels. George Martin has a brilliant mind. This makes three mediums that I've seen Game of Thrones in, and each one brings its own piece to the puzzle. I haven't read the novels or seen the earlier seasons of the show in years, so this was an excellent refresher.

When I found out that the characters didn't look like the ones on the show, I was a bit disappointed. However, once I started reading it, that no longer mattered. The artwork in this book is phenomenal. These updated characters really come to life and become their own entity. So yeah, as with anything Game of Thrones related, this book is excellent.

If you haven't gotten into Game of Thrones yet, you are seriously missing out. I heard there are other graphic Martin novels around too, looking for them immediately!

I am not an avid reader of comics and graphic novels but I am obsessed with everything related to George R R Martin's "A Song Of Ice And Fire".

I thought this was a very good read. It follows the story line well and the character drawings make you think of each character in a different light from the HBO show and the books themselves.

I can't wait to read the second graphic novel!

Revisiting this story for the first time in twelve years. What a fantastic read. Truly, this is THE high fantasy book for me.
George is such a masterful writer. I love the characters, they feel so real. They genuinely feel like actual human beings. It's amazing.
The way we get to know these characters, love them, hate them, change our opinions about them. They are so compelling. It's hard reading some chapters, knowing what will happen in the future makes reading, specially the Starks, much more difficult. To see their hopes and dreams crushed. Knowing the tragedy that awaits them, it makes it difficult to read at times.
Daenerys was another one I struggled with, I absolutely love her, she is my favourite character. But every single one of her chapters included some absolutely disgusting moment where she was sexualized. She is 13 years old at the beginning of the book and 14 by the end. It's revolting. And there was absolutely no need for it. George is not the right person to tell the story of a little girl being a sex slave. As proven by this book. It genuinely creeped me out.
I always felt like the younger characters should be older. But having reread the book now it's mostly Daenerys. Maybe Sansa too. Jon is perfectly fine as a 15 year old, he acts like one at least. He is rash and he is egocentric, but he grows.
Robb could be older as well. A fifteen year old being lord of winterfell, and as we know, future king leading a huge army is odd. He seems too mature for his age.
The world George created is incredible. We get an idea right away that this is a vast world with two huge containers full of different cultures and history. But we mainly focus on winterfell, the wall, and kingslanding. Making it easier to follow and understand, as well as making the reader curious about the rest.
The houses, with their iconography, their words, as well as their history and geographical location are a brilliant way to organize the characters. Since there are so many, the houses make it easier for people to understand who the characters are. This is also then subverted multiple times as we get to know the characters better.
The story can be dark and difficult to read at times. I was surprised at how much less violence there was than in the show, particularly against women. But this is still a very mysogynistic world.
I love these books, and I'm glad I decided to reread them now that I'm older. I definitely should have been reading them when I was 13.

Gorgeously illustrated with vibrant palettes and life-giving characterizations. The art is simply breathtaking. A strong adaptation that would please both Martin fans and newcomers.

Includes a substantial section on the creation process, which illuminates both the skill and the commitment to narrative.

A good read. Captured the key moments of the book with some nice illustrations to match.
