How deep of an impression can a story — or a life — leave, when it is brief? This seems to be the existential and literary question that Brockmeier plays with in his collection of flash fiction, “The Ghost Variations.”
I read this one for book club and, therefore, didn’t get to read it in quite the way I would’ve liked. I recommend floating in & out rather than reading one-hundred 2-3 page stories in a straight shot (trying to finish on a deadline).
Many of the stories seem to center around themes of self-expression and communication, which is just perfectly meta. 😉 Some of my favorite stories include: “A Notable Social Event”, “A Long Chain of Yesterdays”, “Wishes”, “Thirteen Visitations”, “Bees”, “All His Life” (which is very silly), “Take It With Me”, “An Inherited Disorder”, and, *most* notably, “The Abnormalist and the Usualist” (which is barely a ghost story, but ties into my particular interest in religious studies (and absurdity!) so keenly, it’s like it was written just for me).
