I've been reading this set of mysteries as I come across them. I knew who all the principals were, but even if I hadn't read any of the prior books the author gives enough back story (but not too much) so that the reader wouldn't be completely lost. About on par with the rest of the series, a light, cozy mystery backed with lots of cross-stitch store trivia.

The 9th book in the Needlecraft Mystery series.

I liked that this one involved Goddy - but I thought the story could have been stronger. I wavered between a 2 star and 3 star on this - but given the enjoyment of the series as a whole I give it a three star.

A good entry in this series with a satisfying mystery and the addition of a new character. One thing that I did have a problem with though, was the homophobia that was allowed to run through this book. Godwin, the suspect in this book and one of the series' main characters, is gay and throughout the course of her investigation, people make cruel and unwarranted comments about the homosexual lifestyle. I understand that the author was trying to make a point--that is, she (and we as readers) is tolerant, but we must remember that not everyone is. Well and good, but it's a marked contrast to the rest of the series, in which Goddy's homosexuality is barely talked about--it's a facet of who he is, not the main point. In this story, his gay-ness takes center stage in a way that is uncomfortable; that fact the he is gay should be treated, as it usually is, as a fact of life, not some strange new plot development. It didn't seem to fit well with the story itself, which aside from that was quite good.

This is a story that is referred to in later Crewel World mysteries. Godwin and his boyfriend John have broken up. Actually, John threw Godwin out of the house. But, then John turned up dead. And Godwin turns up as the main heir. Can Betsy figure out who actually killed John?

The more books I read in this series the more I enjoy it. At first I felt like I didn't know these characters at all, but deeper into the series I feel like I do and I really like them. (Though Officer Mike is still a complete mystery to me, I wish we saw more of him in this one). The writing style is flowing more easily (in my opinion) and I like how the story unfolded. Poor Gody! I could tell I was attached to these characters when he was arrested and I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to know what happened. It was also interested to really dislike the murder victim in this case, but still need to know who killed him. I was very surprised by many of the secrets that came out,
Spoiler though not surprised that someone at his work killed him.
These are easy to read and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Note: I've been listening to this series on audio-book and I really like the narration.

In this one, things get very personal. Goodwin, Besty's manager and friend is accused of murdering his lover of many years, John. Things don't look good but Besty with the help of the gang at Crewel world gets to the truth. I liked this one quite a bit because instead of being someone from a friend's family, the tragedy hits close to home, like in the debut novel of this series. Pretty good.
