Don’t you just love it when a magic/ belief system is created around a magical Babygirl and Her descendants who purified the land, got turned into the rulers of the realm and given all the power to rule to the point that everything about Her is referred to with capital H and yet the characters use phrases like “good God” .-. Like excuse me? What “God”? Honestly that right there gave me everything I needed to understand that the world building has the same depth as my cereal bowl while acting like it’s deeper that the Mariana Trench. If the savior is such an important figure in Thessan how come they don’t teach about her in school? The names of the previous saviors should be made to be learned, people don’t even know the name of the current savior and no one thinks that’s odd? Or the previous one for the matter? You know the one who was murdered on the street? But W.E this just cements my distrust of authortubers/people who give writing advice on the internet bc I find that they’re rarely capable of execute their craft at the level they make people believe they do.

Dnfing this at 13% because there's just so much random cussing, underwhelming writing, questionable world building and anticlimactic and fanfiction-esque situations and dialogues I can bear in a single lifetime.

(out of curiosity I counted how many times the word fuck and its derivates were used and I got 176, followed by 71 cock/cocks, and cunt for the bronze with 28 mentions)

book #36

this hashtag is something I self-indulgently created for fun when I decided to thin out my immense tbr list as a new years resolution starting from books I added on GR back in 2017/2018/2019, and since I can't seem to do anything quietly and I'm well known for being an overachiever, I had to go and turn it into an official thing. Feel free to check out the #PenguinOnATBRMission shelf if you don't mind keeping up with this insanely over-hyped adventure I got myself into. Take it as a chance to rediscover some books from a few years ago that might have accidentally flown under your radar, or to simply share with another fellow reader your very own reading experience. Happy reading and stay penguin-y!

Bachelorette but deadly

It was ok, the characters were a little one note and I highly dislike arguments that would easily be solved by the characters just explaining themselves clearly but I think there were enough light hearted and funny moments that kept it enjoyable.

5/5 stars, what a gory glorious adventure that was. Very hunger games, very bloody, very descriptive, a bit naughty. I called the book, however, it was kind of obvious, I'm clearly not mad about it! I can't wait for book 2, I can't wait to continue this madness

I really wanted to like this but ended up being disappointed. The characters and writing were boring. So much of what happened felt unnecessary, like a huge portion of the book was just written for shock value and not to further the story at all. Plot had potential, but ultimately it felt like it was wasted.

A real page-turner. I couldn’t put it down after I read the 2nd chapter. Action-packed, with quality characters, character development, non-melodramatic drama, and a loveplot that is impactful enough to feel real, without disturbing the action-plot (When saying this, I’m comparing it to a ton of love-subplots in action movies where the love feels unnatural...about as unnatural as the under-developed female love-interest...).

The book is very inclusive. Thumbs up for diversity!

Here’s my critique:

1. The language. I don’t mind cursewords, I don’t care, it doesn’t offend me, but at times I felt there was too much, it was unnecessary. It felt like it was there not because this is what the characters would say, but it was assumed it was what the audience wanted. And that very well could be. For me, it grabbed me out of the immersion a couple of times.

Spoiler alert! If you don’t want spoilers, read no further!

2. «Anger» is not enough to make a man win a fist-fight alone against 3 trained men. It wasn’t deus ex machina, so kudos for that, but it still felt like the main character was good at something he wasn’t (1 day of training with the gladius is not enough!). Anger usually makes a fighter stupid, not good. A good fighter is calm and collected.

3. In many books, too often the MC is good at several things, and the MC’s BF is either comic relief, a shoulder to cry on or someone to appear with encouraging words. I really wish «The Prince» showed he was good at something, not just a pretty boy. Tobias’ best friend died early in the book, so there wasn’t much room to show his skillset, but the Prince came in later, and could’ve easily been a better fighter than Tobias, or good at...anything. That said, it was commented later in the novel that nobody understood why the Prince had gotten so far.
