This is my second time reading this novel, and I was surprised at how gripping it was. On first reading, I was most struck by the poise and density of the language-few write as well as Quin. But also unavoidable was the seedy, claustrophobic stickiness of Quin’s Brighton, and the futility she finds in human desire. This time, I found myself pulled in by the almost thrillerish plot and deft shifts between vaudeville, noir, and comedy.
