Thought I would absolutely hate this book but it was actually pretty fun excluding the typical problems that come from a super old book

This book is just begging to become a Monty Python movie adaptation.

Voltaire’s “Candide” is a satirical take on the philosophy “everything happens for a reason”. Following naive little Candide through several misfortunes, you watch him and keep wondering why he still has any hope at all. This book has so many tragedies in it that it should feel sad, but when the main character has dumb golden retriever energy, you can’t help but root that his belief in “this life is the best one you can live” to eventually be true. (I mean, just imagine in Andy Samberg played Candide… it’d be so wholesome)

It was a quick read, but a good one. Definitely a good gateway book for someone interested in philosophy.

I enjoyed the story for what it was: a lot of traveling and a lot of misery. It was never going to top a 3 star rating because I am too cynical and just don’t really vibe with the whole “everything happens for a reason” philosophy. The writing was easy, definitely a good philosophical classic for a beginner.

It was a funny little read, though not as enlightening as it's status as a classic suggests.

Only read Candide and not the other sections that is in the Backgrounds and Criticisms

In the version I had, read 81 pages and the ending was honestly disappointing/unsatisfactory, but I can see how peaceful it is compared to what the characters had gone through. Didn't understand a lot of the philosophical stuff. Story was alright - there were some funny parts.
SpoilerCandide kept on getting scammed bruh and he literally didn't even want to marry Cunegonde anymore bc she became ugly?? The whole time he wanted to marry her and when he was given the chance he didn't want to anymore. But he still married her bc her brother refused it 😭 and then what they did to her brother like dang - I'm honestly dead
