Who knew this story would hit so hard!? Now, I have not read the original so I cannot compare it to the GN but this was a trip. Having a simplified version of Communism with talking animals seems silly but it was much deeper than expected. The art style helped with that as the pictures were simplified versions of the subjects and by not outlining anything in black, it made them fade into each other (maybe that's the point) but it was a stark difference from the white background throughout the book. I had a great time and this is a great way to consume the subject matter for those wary of classic literature.

I picked this up and read some of it while at Barnes & Noble recently. Story is as excellent as it was when I read it in prose form, the only real issue I have is with the art. It looks like bland watercolor paintings you see at an art gallery. That's not to say that I don't like watercolor, as I think that it can be utilized well, like in Jeff Lemire's Roughneck. Despite the disappointing artwork, I was quite pleased with this adaptation.

For my review of the original book, go here.

This is the first time I have read Animal Farm, and I felt as though the illustrations brought this story to life even more. I am unsure it was the full version as it contained mostly dialogue, but I still got a great sense of the story. You can also clearly see the reference to the trauma and disarray of post-WWII Europe and the critique of Communist Russia was spot on. Every detail in this book had political significance and made it really enjoyable. Worryingly, there are obviously ways in which the situation in Animal Farm can be seen in our own society.

This has made me feel optimistic about reading George Orwell's other works, but also to try the original version of Animal Farm. I would highly recommend the graphic novel because the illustrations bring the story to life and fit well with the style of the story. They really do heighten the reading experience.
