Well. That was a pretty amazing and dramatic (true) story. The Afterward almost made me knock it down to three stars, but... I decided to go with my gut on the bulk of the book.

Like others have noted, there was a lot of potential here but the writing failed to deliver. There's an afterward by Tere Fassbender that shows that she could have written this story well without Logan. The book feels odd - as though it were written without a plan and it vacillates between factual text and over-the-top idealization of Fassbender such as when she was described as a female Moses.
I listened to the audiobook and was annoyed that the book didn't start for a full 18 minutes due to Logan's over-inflated acknowledgements and preface.

Saw this woman interviewed on "The Today Show" a while ago and was intrigued by her story. Fascinating story, but less than intriguing writing. There were so many angles to take with this story, and I didn't feel as if the author ever chose which one he was using. I asked someone (before I read it) if it was a disturbing read, and she said know. I'd have to disagree. Any time you read about an entire family being murdered and a child surviving it's disturbing.

Such an interesting story, it’s actually impressive the book fell as flat as it did.

A little girl is left floating in the Atlantic Ocean after the boat she was on sinks under suspicious circumstances. Only her and the captain survive. Found miles and days apart. Their stories contradict. Why? How? Should we trust the World War II fighter pilot-hero captain, or the sweet, innocent, apple cheeked girl from Wisconsin? Is it murder? Negligence?

Somehow, the story gets bogged down with unnecessary dialogue and a lack of storytelling. The compelling bits of survival and interpersonal intrigue were clinically presented. I enjoy sailing and grew up around boats, and even I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the sailing bits. A good ghost writer and this would have been a great book.

Listened to this on audio. What a fascinating story! How come I had never heard about this? This happened just a bit before I was born, but you'd think I would have heard of it at some point. Anyway, incredible how people can deceive.
