I really loved the mother/daughter generational aspect of this book. However, I was looking more for a horror/thriller and this kind of morphed into a fantasy. Still, a good story by an author I have enjoyed in the past.

With this being the fifth Jennifer McMahon book I’ve read, I’ve become used to the exciting, engaging storyline that keeps me obsessively reading, often with the ending being less captivating, but still worth the read. However, this book fell extremely flat for me. The majority of the book seemed to drag on with the hopes of something intriguing happening. Most characters were cruel and unlikable, though I know they were supposed to be, but it resulted in me not caring much about what happens to them (I’m looking at you, Amy). The worst part was the ending, which was fast paced, but predictable and frustrating. I felt myself screaming in my head “just get to the point!!” for most of the book.
There’s certainly McMahon books I’d recommend, but not this one.

I raced right through this one and really thought it was going to be a 4 star, not as terrifying as The Winter People, but still up there. However, I was a bit disappointed by the ending, as I wanted the revelation to be more complicated than it ended up being. So, I'm ending with a 3 star, though it had me hooked until about those last 50 pages.

I just love Jennifer McMahon. I will read anything she writes. I can’t get enough of the way she blends the past and present so well.

I love Jennifer McMahon's books. A little magical realism, a little suspense, a lot not putdownable.
