This was a weird one to rate. On one hand, I liked how Gunty brought everything together in the end, but it took so long to get there that it was hard to figure out how the plots were connected and keep track of what was happening. I think Gunty was trying to do a lot in this book - tell the story of Vanty Vale, write about the characters in the apartment building, tell Blandine's story, and it was just too much for a single book. I think if Gunty had narrowed her focus a bit, it would have been a better read.

This book was frustrating, as I loved the concept (a slice of life as social commentary with complex and sometimes morally grey characters), and some sections were brilliantly written (especially the sections exploring the lives of the other residents in the building). But for every spectacular bit of writing, there were equal sections that felt overwritten, drawn out, too rambling, or really laboured the point. I still can't decide how I feel about the ending and
making the stabbing non fatal seemed a bit rushed and made me question the whole point
but maybe it's just not for me! Normally I love books like this, so despite it being an alright read overall with one or two stand-out moments, I was left feeling a little underwhelmed and pretty unmotivated to finish by the end.

it’s been a long time since I’ve been so amazed at a book and how clever and effective writing can be. Tess Gunty has this phenomenal dexterity with words and crafts such engrossing characters and almost (almost!) unbelievable stories. I loved how the main event (hinted at from the very beginning!) is built and how each seemingly disparate story is necessary for it to pack such a punch.

Simultaneously one of the realest and most surreal books I've ever read. Blandine is, in equal parts, endearing and insufferable. She reads very much like the very knowledgeable but not very wise epitome of her age. I loved the little asides of odd but remarkably real looks into other people's lives and how they all tied together.

This was parts funny, parts pathetic (not in the looser sense but in the sense it emoted empathy from me), and parts despicable. The ending was sad for me (that was pathetic, for example). But getting to the end was largely amusing, but only if I removed myself from the characters (usually, I read as if I was a fly on the wall, but in this case, I often found myself being a fly on the other side of a window). If I’d been in the house, it would’ve been far too pathetic and far too despicable and hence, too hard to read.

Bit too weird for me. The ending brought it together but definitely too long chapters and too many miserable characters!
