Delightful! The dead mouse as a metaphor for chivalry was 100%!
I found it funny and charming, though being old, there's no representation of any kind in this.
“You remind me of an old cat I once had. Whenever he killed a mouse he would bring it into the drawing-room and lay it affectionately at my feet. I would reject the corpse with horror and turn him out, but back he would come with his loathsome gift. I simply couldn’t make him understand that he was not doing me a kindness. He thought highly of his mouse and it was beyond him to realize that I did not want it.
You are just the same with your chivalry. It’s very kind of you to keep offering me your dead mouse; but honestly I have no use for it. I won’t take favors just because I happen to be a female.”

This was such a fun little story! Chalk full of people of moderate intelligence- at best - this book is full of humor. It manages to both make characters somewhat endearing, while also poking fun at their ridiculousness. It’s somewhat a detective story, but mostly a comedy or even satire on detective stories from the time.

The humor holds up really well and it was quite a fun little read.
2-3 brief comments made by characters that are racist and specifically orientalist in the fashion of the time period, the worst of which is a character being described as crazy by another character by comparing him to people from India
