This was more like 3 stars until she started writing about her experience in NYC on 9/11/2001. Reading her perspective really added a layer to my understanding of what the first responders and team members went through in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attack. Other than that, I did find it interesting but not really remarkable in regards to reflection and writing style. The details were interesting to me as a forensic nurse examiner.

Very interesting.
It feels strange to say that I enjoyed a book on such a morbid subject, but I did. The section on 9/11 was particularly haunting as well as informative. I grossed out multiple people by sending them quotes from the book about the consistency of brains and donkey genitalia. Just a really great book.

Truly some gruesome descriptions in here but utterly fascinating.
Suicide mention cw:
I didn't agree with the author's stance on suicidenamely her repeated insistence that it is a selfish act, but I also am not going to police someone's opinion/feelings on suicide when they lost a parent to the act at age 13.

I'd like to give this 3.5 stars, it was very interesting. At one point, though, I had to stop reading for a while. At first I wasn't sure why I had lost interest, but looking back on it I believe it was for personal reasons. The time just wasn't right for me to be reading and thinking so much about death, disease, corpses, mortality, etc. When I was ready, I went back to it and loved it again.
So, with the caveat that you need to be the right frame of mind, I highly recommend this very interesting look at the work of a medical examiner.
