I had to reread chapters or entire sections just because the writing was so clunky in places. Especially at the start, the first 7 chapters was like waiting for paint to dry. At times it was just like,,,sketched over events from the characters history that didn't match up with what was going on in the actual scene.
What I enjoyed about The Poppy War was that it was all worldbuilding and history and like mechanics of war without any of the romantic interests. Fourth Wing had the wolrdbuilding, the mechanics of war and partial history. But it was like as if the school was entirely run by the third years, not by the teachers. They were hardly there in lessons. It was like Xaden ran the show. Also the romance just felt misplaced, or at least too fast paced. I love an enimies to lovers as much as the next person, but this wasn't it. The friendships and betrayals were excellent, loved that. Disability representation in a main character - again, excellent. The dragons bit,,,inner monologue mixed with cringe dragon interruptions at times just felt juvenile.
Violet as an FMC though, just unbearable. And boring, pick-me main characters just make reading a chore. She's giving early seasons Meredith Grey. Dain, also unbearable. Liam, Garrick, Bodhi, Xaden, Rhiannon, Imogen, Ridoc: all exceptional characters who I want more of in the next book.
All in all, it was just,,,,fine, really. I would maybe read it again just to give it another chance, amd I'll probably read the sequel given that it's out in like 5 weeks and I'm intrigued by the cliffhanger. But like genuinely, I feel like this is massively overrated.

So world-related plot holes aside, it’s well worth the read. And it’s very much my jam. (The sexual scenes were probably the best written smut I’ve read in a long time. Well done.)

The last 1/3 of the book is Violet being horny and repeating herself. I didn’t like her whiny attitude to begin with but these outages me over the edge. Girl, stop.Graphic: Sexual content
