This was such a fun, quirky read. Olivia is navigating a new school and a new home yet again as she moves with her Dad who is a building maintenance man. This has an entertaining cast of characters who are all dealing with a range of issues and they all contrast with Olivia and her own grief.

This was odd and trippy. Olivia lives in an apartment building inhabited by magical tenants. Not magical in a fairyland rainbow way- darker than that. I think this would appeal to super imaginative kids who don't need a linear story but just want weird stuff to happen.

Strikes just the right balance between realistic fiction and ghosts and supernatural strangeness. Olivia is endearing, and I expect later books may explore her psychology a little more, though that remains to be seen.

Middle-grade/upper elementary.

Boyo and I are listening to this on tape in the car, and then I got the book out to check out the pictures and finished it in book form. It's funny how different a book and a book on tape can be - with the tape you hear all the reader's nuances and the tone is definitely changed, but the characters really come to life. On paper you get pictures and get to use your imagination more.[return]Not that that has anything to do with reviewing this book, which I really enjoyed. The stories were hilarious and exciting and twisted in that great kid book way, and wound together beautifully. Great book!
