I really didn’t take to the story during the first third because the character can be very unlikeable and the writing can be racist at times; however, the tellings of what mental health and asylums were like at the time were super powerful. I grew to appreciate this book so much more by the end.

Why is no one talking about the blatant racism in this?? I thought I was being unreasonable being disgusted by the descriptions of people from different races because no one mentioned it in any of their 5 star reviews of this “masterpiece”. 
This was an almost dnf for me, saved only by my own curiosity of knowing where this character would end up and if it would follow the same author’s demise.

I really enjoyed it. Preferred the second half. Definitely a very clever book, but I think I was a bit too dumb to understand some of it. I reckon I will at some point though.

"I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet"

the imagery in this book is so incredibly vivid and i think it will stay with me for a long time. it's almost comforting to know that people have been feeling this way for years and years.
