I really didn’t take to the story during the first third because the character can be very unlikeable and the writing can be racist at times; however, the tellings of what mental health and asylums were like at the time were super powerful. I grew to appreciate this book so much more by the end.

I really enjoyed it. Preferred the second half. Definitely a very clever book, but I think I was a bit too dumb to understand some of it. I reckon I will at some point though.

This story was surprisingly relevant given the time it's set. I didn't know what it was about before reading, it quickly escalates, but mostly is a beautifully told story about not beautiful themes.
