Every time I read a book in this series (except the first, which I loved), I end up dreading picking it up by the middle. I almost didn’t read this book at all after finishing The Queen of Attolia. I generally hate Irene as a character, I don’t love the relationship with Gen, and this book goes out of its way to make you dislike most of Attolia just for the twist payoff in the end.

And that’s not a spoiler—every book in this series leads you through a long complicated series of events where you’re meant to think one thing, because you are explicitly told that thing, and then surprise! at the end, things were actually NOT the way they were presented.

I may or may not read the last book in the series. I’m not sure. I’m not sure I can suffer through another full novel just to enjoy the last chapter.

I JUST LOVE THESE BOOKS SO MUCH, HOLY COW.

Upon this reread, I think I might like this one evEN MORE THAN BOOK 2???

At any rate, Eugenides remains my favourite fictional character of all time. NO CONTEST.

Eugenides is an oddly likable character. You know he's a scoundrel, but you still want to love him. He's a bit like Han Solo to me, one of my very first crushes.

Eugenides, the infamous Thief of Eddis, is now the King of Attolia. He married the Queen, who he loves in some unexplainable way that still has me scratching my head from book 2 in the series. The Attolians do not respect him, or their union, and do their best to thwart him at every step--including those who should be protecting him, his King's Guard.

Lots of good political intrigue in this one. These books go much deeper than you would think from the cover. Another enjoyable installment in the series.

Absolutely phenomenal. What I’ve always wanted from medieval-esque fiction.

The third book in the series and I am still turning pages late into the night trying to figure out the plot twists and turns. Told from yet another's character's perspective, I am in love with these books. A beautiful mix of adventure, mystery, suspense, politics, and just plain fun - romantic without being sappy, intense without being long-winded, passionate but clean, violence without gore.
