Picked up this pick when some of the description  mirrored my own fears. Took me a bit to get into the book, as it jumps back and forth through time and the main character’s memories, but found it interesting and engaging once I realized this. I found myself rooting for the main character often, and wondering what folks around her thought about her increasingly clear battle with mental health. I thought this book did a great job of illuminating what anxiety, dissociation, and suicidal ideation feel like. It’s interesting seeing the perspective of this character in a place I was once in, having similar thoughts as I once did. I enjoyed the book and enjoyed the up and downs throughout and little surprises and turns here and there.

I loved the humor in this book, and the way I saw myself and others I love in the main character’s struggles with depression, family dysfunction, and just being an adult in your 20s. It’s dark, but it’s a type of dark I can handle right now.

This book was slow at parts but overall enjoyable as someone who used to hyper fixate on death. I found some parts repetitive but the ending made up for it. It gives me dear Evan Hansen vibes.

This was delightful. I feel seen and understood, and though the book is heavy in its constant reflections on mortality and loss, there's something almost hopeful in the way Gilda navigates the world.

This was unlike any book I have ever read. It was so raw and real, scarily so. Anxiety and depression can be so debilitating and this is really shown through Gilda’s character. I need to read the rest of Emily’s books asap.

Is the funny actually in the room with us? I didn‘t spot it anywhere.

The Introduction in this book calls it „darkly funny“, „delightfully awkward“ and „pitch-perfect observations about the human condition“. I disagree with all of that.

I never understood what was going on with Gilda‘s brain and her thought processes and found the book relentlessly depressing and anxiety-inducing.

The first few pages of the book are not representative for the rest of the book.

I would only recommend this book to people who want to read about someone who is deeply depressed, anxiety-ridden, in constant panic attacks and who thinks about killing themselves
on nearly every page
.

I do not recommend this to anyone who is in a mental health crisis or who struggles with their mental health in general.

The only reason I‘m not giving this book one star is because the first few pages weren‘t bad and I was moved a bit during the last few pages.

1.5 stars
