Man, I cannot even explain the disappointment I felt with this one. Probably because I was really looking forward to it.

Was it enjoyable? Mostly. Suzanne's books always are. But it WAS a huge let down in regards to characters and the relationship development.

I didn't find the transition between Levi and Piper authentic or genuine. We're told he was super interested in her when she was eighteen but didn't make a move for reasons. So I'm assuming he was just attracted to her physically? Nothing deeper. Not like he "knew" her. And apparently Piper had a crush on him. But it was never told in such a way that it was more than a shallow attraction. And of course they learned they were anchors which sort of explained the pull he felt for her and why he felt the need to "watch over" her the last six years. Then he proceeded to try and convince her to accept the anchor bond, agreed to give her time and then they began getting to know one another.

But here's the thing.. they really didn't. Yes we see scenes where he tells her a little about his past but I don't remember any scenes where they actually got to know one another. And then before you know it they cross the line to having sex. And well that became a mess.

Honestly the most disappointing aspect of this story was two things for me.

One being the fact the author wasted SO much of this book with ridiculous stalling and inner monologues whining about the others feelings without once communicating these doubts or questions. I was so frustrated I barely enjoyed half the book tbh. The relationship between Piper and Levi felt immature and underdeveloped. I absolutely couldn't understand the deeper feelings they...well Piper continued to whine about.

Secondly was the heroine Piper. I just plain didn't like her. And sure, I've had my moments with Suzanne's heroines being OTT independent, annoying and trying too hard to be sarcastic and funny but honestly I would have preferred her usual type over Piper. She wasn't written like the other girls of the series. Again, she read across rather immature and juvenile BECAUSE of her endless wavering and doubting of Levi's feelings. Especially because she would force us to listen to her whine about it, and watch her unsuccessfully push him away and then get butt hurt when it didn't play out how she wanted BECAUSE she didn't speak up. She just kept expecting everything to work out without communicating with him what she actually wanted. Like, how hard was that? Yes, yes all the heroines have different personalities but generally Suzanne writes her ladies with a little more back bone and desire to fight for what they want. They sure didn't drag out dumb shit and bottle it up instead of telling their dudes. So, yeah I didn't like her. I found her as frustrating as I did annoying.

I expected the drama with her stepsister being his ex and assumed it'd be the only real lame or predictable aspect of the story. But alas, this one was a big let down for me. By the end I wasn't a fan of them as a couple.

I'm going to break from my annoying contrasted Dark in You feelings for a second to say that I *marginally* liked this one better. It still feels like a lot of wasted potential but I thought that the writing was slightly improving, creating a better space for the characters to interact.

A reaper protects his newly found anchor from attacks. Levi's book! He's a little more toned down compared to the typical SW MMC, but still carries the possessive alpha edge. He's relentless at wanting her to accept their bond but gives her space as well. Piper is sweet and conflict-avoidant, but she's tough, self-aware and can kick major ass when needed. There's mutual pining, though the romance developed quickly due to their anchor bond.

They have a genuine friendship which acts as a foundation to their romance. The friend and bonding moments are some of the best parts. Their mutual protectiveness and all the 🔥 steam are great, too. I also liked that the MCs are different from the usual SW-styled MCs. However, a little less waffling on commitment (especially Levi) would've upped the book for me. Props to the action/suspense, plus the friend group times.

It's finally time for Levi's story. I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I'm for this. Suzanne Wright can pull me into her stories and I don't have any other option but to read the book all in one sitting. Every. Single. Time. Her writing is magic and I cannot recommend her enough.

Levi is the leader of Knox's sentinels, but when he finds his anchor in Piper, the step=sister of one of his ex bed buddies, he won't stop at anything to have her. Piper knows Levi, and she has been attracted to him since she met him years ago, but never pursue him. However, now that they know they are each other anchors, Piper can't leave him out of her life. And when acts of vandalism start happening around her that escalate into physical attacks, Levi won't leave her side not only because she's his bond. Well, to get their happy ending they need to put their reservations aside, and Levi is a mean MF who knows how to get what he wants.

The book is not out yet and I'm already begging for the next story in the Dark In You series. How will I be able to last until the next book is out? I really have no idea.

This one was a little outside of type, in a way that didn't jive with me. Throughout the series we've had powerful, impressive women being drawn in by badass alpha males, and it's a formula I dig. In this book, though, Piper is just not that impressive.

Not as a person - she's a cool character, laid back and sensible - but in terms of power. She's the first FMC that felt like a damsel, like she needed the big alpha to take care of her because she just doesn't have much power. It was kind of a bummer. I just vibe more with the alpha male stories when the women feel like equals. It's not that the other women didn't get into trouble and need help, it's more that they were capable of holding their own, and may have been able to handle it all but why be a stupid jackass and refuse to accept help from people who love you? They were at risk, but it was not in such a damsel way.

I don't know. YMMV of course, but this one just didn't do it for me.

God I love this series ❤️

Book 8 of the #DarkInYouSeries was brilliant. But there was never any doubt that it wouldn’t be. I adore all of @suzanne_wright_author works but especially her Dark In You and Shifter series.

Anyway, Piper is a Nightmare and Levi is a Reaper. Piper has always felt an attraction to Levi - too bad when she first meets him he’s her vile step sister’s bed partner.

Little does she know, Levi and his demon have been feeling a little possessive of Piper over the years and it all comes to a head when they discover that they are anchors. DRAMA! Especially in the form of her “can’t-let-it-go” step sister who is enraged over this development.

But they can’t dwell on that - someone is actively trying to kill Piper and a long forgotten serial killer with ties to Levi has made himself known again. Levi will stop at nothing to protect his anchor - who’s quickly becoming to mean so much more to him.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series. All the characters are fantastic (still adore Khloe) and the storylines are gripping and original.
