Started a little confusing due to the switching between characters and timelines each chapter, and also ended pretty abruptly. Still a great murder mystery with lots of twists and turns.

I love Crime Junkie and this book was on my radar even before I found the podcast. But making the connection bumped it to the top of my TBR.
It was an easy read. It was simple but had twists I wasn't expecting. I thought I knew who did it from the beginning, but was proven wrong multiple times.
Margot seems quite lost in life and there were some plot holes I didn't understand. Like what exactly happened with her parents? She didn't have friends?? I found Uncle Luke to be very loveable.
Also, not important, but I totally picture Detective Townsend looking like Gibbs from NCIS lol

I could not have guessed the ending, what a twist! But it did make sense and it was a great whodunnit. Devastating though.

Margot returns home to the small town where her best friend’s murder still haunts everyone, just as another little girl goes missing.

While this story is very similar to a true crime case, it is engaging and heart racing. In some ways it is very biased if you think of it as being based on the JonBenet Ramsey case but only if you think of it that way. I loved this book but the ending felt rushed and I didn’t really care about the main character until the last 20% of the book. The dual timelines were interesting and show the parallels of the story well.

For me the ending was too ambiguous and didn’t make it clear if it was the end or if more could come of it later.

It reads like a young adult book because some really basic things are over explained. You can really hear the authors voice - which some people think is a good thing, but I find Ashley Flowers and Crime Junkie obnoxious. I checked out the book before realizing it was her otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten it!

Anyways, so many problems could be fixed if people just talked to each other. Most of the major plot points are miscommunications which I find boring and not creative?

The main character is annoying. I wasn’t rooting for her. I really liked Luke and Pete and Jodie! Everyone else seemed flimsy or shallow.

I did enjoy the twists - some things were very Jerry Springer. Always a fan of Springer. The book was a 2 until Springer things showed up!

Spoiler

It is very unrealistic for a serial killer to stalk some victims and kill some victims. Stalking could escalate to killing, but it wouldn’t be an every other pattern like the book suggested. It was a convenient way to make the plot work.
