A Woman of No Importance is not Oscar Wilde's most renowned play, but it is potentially my favourite. This takes place in one location, in one dat at an upper-class dinner party. Oscar Wilde builds tension with the twists and turns, and explores the constraints of social behaviour in the 19th century with absolute genius to create humour and a feeling of high stakes by the end of the play.

You talk of atonement for a wrong done. What atonement can be made to me? There is no atonement possible. I am disgraced: he is not. That is all. It is the usual history of a man and a woman as it usually happens, as it always happens. And the ending is the ordinary ending. The woman suffers. The man goes free.
finally some female wilde characters who are actual girlbosses- at first i was like why do mrs arbuthnot and hester think that women are sinful and deserve punishment, but then i realised that they just need time to realise they’ve been controlled by society’s expectations, and when they do they become such strong, autonomous women- also it’s so funny seeing a female lord henry in the form of mrs allonby she was hilarious
I wasn’t sure I was going to understand this play, but it was so fucking funny. I guess that’s why it’s timeless.

Not as funny or witty as the last one I read (Lady Windermere’s Fan) and a bit more clumsy/heavyhanded, but still a great work. It is still very sharp from a broader perspective, just less so. I wanted to give this 3 stars but I still think if I evaluate it compared against like the totality of texts I’ve read, it still comes out considerably above average
