I enjoyed this one for the first 3/4….the protagonist is a bit limp but it was entertaining and quick to read. The last quarter goes off the rails and the epilogue killed it for me.

I don’t know what I just read. I mean, the moody/creepy vibes of this book and the first half are worth three stars alone, but then it just kind of goes off the rails.

•Description: “Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Long plagued by troubling rumors, the former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel.

An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But Elin's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept.

Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge--there's something about the hotel that makes her nervous. And when they wake the following morning to discover Laure is missing, Elin must trust her instincts if they hope to find her. With the storm closing off all access to the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic.

Elin is under pressure to find Laure, but no one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she's the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they are all in. . ..”

•Thoughts: So, I loved the first half. Combing storms, sanatoriums, unreliable narrators, and masked murderers- it makes for some really great thriller vibes. But then there were the red-herrings on top of red-herrings on top of red-herrings, plot holes, and then the epilogue- who…what…I don’t even know. I was on board with the ending until the epilogue. I just don’t know what to think. I’m told the ending was written to leave room for a sequel, and I would read it. I think.

•Rating: I do think it’s at least a three star (⭐️ ⭐️⭐️) rating because of the first half and because I thought one of the red-herrings was clever.

I'd give it 3 1/2 stars. It was entertaining, but parts of the book and the main character were annoying.
