It's a beautiful thing seeing words and art share a heavy narrative like this

Read this twice back to back to see how many meanings I can get out of the artwork and the words separately and together
Ohh so good

Good story with the reminder of where to find comfort and find reason to change in a world where there are nothing but the same reruns: war, disease, hate.
The artwork is fantastic and powerful, filled with beautiful color and even stronger when it lacks color.

It's very hard for me to rate a book like Ain't Burned All the Bright. It's very conceptual and also very visceral and in-the-moment-feelings. It's very dark while also reminding you to breathe. I think at its heart it captures an experience of a very particular moment in time and the feelings, confusions, struggles, and moments of beauty despite all the hard.

Poetry is not really my jam. I have read a few novels in verse and enjoyed those because I thought they moved incredibly quickly (fewer words?) And we're still following a storyline. This book had some absolutely beautiful lines and captured very raw feelings from a very scary period of time in our lives. The illustrations matched the writing beautifully. This right here is probably just my personal preference, but I feel like a story was being told but there was no outcome. That again, could just be me and not totally digging poetry, but I wanted to know that his dad ended up being okay, I wanted there to be some kind of takeaway, some kind of call to action. I don't feel like I can give this a rating because it is taking someone's personal experience and how they coped with the pandemic instead of someone writing a fictional tale of a fictional person going through the same thing. I am glad I read this though!
