This was a damn good time. I usually don’t vibe with character-driven plots, but this had enough winding paths and environmental factors to make it feel like watching a horror wild west HBO show. Super strong characters, audibly chuckled at parts, and it had a lot of heart (and gore) in the end.

To describe the book in one word - unique. It’s a hard book to explain. The writing style of this book was so compelling and one of a kind. It did have grotesque descriptions of events that almost made me put down the book. However, these events were inline with the plot and characters unlike other books who chose to be graphically morbid for no reason. It had a complex plot that was hard to predict. I don’t think it had the most satisfying ending but the ending almost fit perfectly to the style of the book.

The audio edition is a treat, complete with musical accompaniment for a couple of campfire songs. I was unsure if I would like this; the synopsis on the ARC didn’t quite sell it for me and the first chapter really tests your judgment of character. I’m glad I waited until the audiobook release, John Pirhalla is a good fit in terms of tone and pacing, and succeeds at voicing a large and diverse cast of characters.
