🤔🤔🤔

I knew I was in for a weird time because I saw the movie adaptation in theaters before I knew it was a book. The book is just as weird and perplexing, if not more. I'm not interested enough to continue with the series, but I might try some other books by the author.

I just thought it was boring. Maybe I didn't understand it, but I really didn't like it. I just wanted to read a book, so I picked this up. It was easy to get through, I finished it in a day, but it was just boring. I just didn't care much about it.

A haunting, confusing, almost ethereal sci-fi piece, with elements of supernatural/eldritch horror that feel very much more like magical realism. I most liked how effectively the writing conveys how much of the reality of Area X is beyond human comprehension. You're not going to understand what is actually going on, any more than the narrator does. While I generally have no love for first-person narratives, I really enjoyed the biologist as narrator; her thought processes are so bizarrely relatable (the autism) and entertaining that I was immediately drawn in to her character, fleshed out through her philosophical musings and arguments with the psychologist. I also really liked the Tower and the Lighthouse as complementary and opposing entities/characters. I think overall the story is an unsettling study on loneliness, loss, and disease, and how these physical and psychological tortures can corrupt and transform the self.

The pace is quite slow though, with little action to drive the plot forward -- I expected a much more dynamic story from the summary. However, I'm still tempted to try out the next book in the series.

Went into this book knowing I wouldn’t get any answers and therefore I was able to enjoy this wonderful, weird experience. Usually not a fan of scenery descriptions but the writing and/or biology perspective certainly made it more interesting. Throughout I was speculating along with the biologist (and at some point, hallucinating with her too, reading one of my ideas into it and realising later I misread) and formed many theories that may or may not be true. Very intriguing.

I think this book genuinely altered my brain. Haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Made me want to go back, read it again and scribble it full of my thoughts.
