Disclaimer: my only real experience with major superhero franchises (DC and Marvel) comes from the movies, not the original source material. However, based on that limited exposure, Invincible by Robert Kirkman felt fresh and exciting. He uses plenty of recognizable tropes, but he never seems to rely on them for material. Instead, these tropes feel more like an homage, and they are more often used to tease DC and Marvel instead of rip them off. Kirkman also subverts readers' expectations constantly, with twists I won't state for fear of spoiling people.

Almost all of the characters introduced within these pages feel realized, and Kirkman makes me care about most of them within pages of their initial introduction. He knows how to utilize his supporting cast well. Side characters will show up just often enough that their own sideplots remain on the reader's mind, without these characters appearing too often and bogging down the immediate tension of the story. Due to an expansive cast, there are often many different plotlines occurring at once, and Kirkman hops between them seamlessly. The pacing rarely, if ever, staggers, which can be difficult for an author to manage when they create a story with so much occurring. On top this, the main plotline is always clear and continuously built upon, even when the characters start off addressing one of these many subplots. The main arc feels well-planned, and if it's not, Kirkman does a good job hiding that. As a big fan of Kirkman's Walking Dead series, I was glad to find that Invincible is different but equally entertaining.
