If I could give this book bonus points for the writing of its characters, I would. The voice of Barry on the page felt so alive, you could convince me this is a biography. Which is to say the writing is incledible and the characters are complex and deeply flawed, but you can't help but hope they become better people and achieve the happiness that, despite it all, they undoubtly deserve. A must-read in my humble opinion!!

ps: if you enjoyed Mr. Loverman, try The Words That Remain by Stênio Gardel next :)

Really enjoyed this read — the plot and the dual perspective is well done, and Evaristo has a masterful way of approaching patois in first person narration, as in girl, woman, other.

Think I preferred this to gwa; the very very end threw me a little bit but overall the characters are well constructed and it’s nice to see a gay storyline that’s not tragic or saccharine.
