The Darkness That Comes Before: 5/5
All set up. All very good setup. The line the title is from goes hard. Delightful characters and atmosphere.

The Warrior Prophet: 5/5
The series really took off. Delivered wonderfully on the setup of book 1.

The Thousandfold Thought: 5/5
Might be the weakest. The choice of PoVs upset me, but understand the choice. The Thousandfold Thought was a weak title, and felt like the author just felt like a plan some guy came up with should have a cool name. There was no "Thousandfold Thought" just the literal plot of the series. The book was very good though. The naming thing just stuck with me.

The series as a whole is great. Loved the characters and the world, and magic crusade is just a great recipe. The series has a permeating sense of grandeur and omen.
The sequel series (The Aspect-Emperor) is a very different beast, and you will want to read it after this. It is brilliant and I loved it but I don't even know how to succinctly express how hard it is to recommend. It is everything the first series is but more. More grand, more fantasy, more philosophical, more horrible, more depressing. I think Bakker's flaws as an author come through a little more, but I don't even know if I buy that. The Aspect-Emperor lingers.

Pretty anticlimactic ending to the series... a lot of time spent on people I don’t care about.

Bakker tripping over himself in order to start working on The Aspect-Emperor. Book lacks the personality of its prequels, reminds me of Return of the Jedi.
