Wow. Even more incredible to know it's a true story based on the author's grandmother's childhood!

What a gorgeous tribute to the author's grandmother--so in many ways, it is inspired by true events! I love how moving, the main girl, Marvel, doesn't see the house in the woods as a home.....initially. I know that is the case for many of us.
I want to give this one a re-read.
I'm also blown away by the detailing and authenticity of the illustrations. They made me feel the emotion of every character.

What a beautiful illustrations and what a wonderful story. The fact that it is based on a real story, and that some of the people in the book were still alive when the book was published (and maybe even now) made it that much more special.
The kids really savoured this book, and so did I. So recommended

My kids and I love this book! The illustrations are gorgeous and the story is cozy and speaks to working through difficult times and being content. Great lessons all around!

What an absolutely beautiful book. The illustrations are rich in detail — even in the snowy winter section. This book is beautiful in many ways. The illustrations are with historical details. Marvel's true family story educates the young and reminds the older of the Great Depression and how this families hard work and love for each other made life good. Highly recommended!
