I read hundreds of books every year yet it always amazes me when I find out I have missed out on reading an acclaimed novel for so long. Written in 1981, Goodnight Mister Tom is the story of young Will Beech, a London evacuee, who finds himself under the guardianship of grumpy ole' Tom Oakley on the brink of the Second World War.

On the surface, GMT might seem like a simple, straightforward story of the adventures of a young boy but it cannot be looked upon as a mere children's book as it tackles serious issues like physical and emotional abuse.

Sometimes, in life, you find people, who may not be related to you in any way but you end up forging bonds with them that last a lifetime. GMT is a story that unites two lonely souls and teaches us no matter how tough & bleak life is, if there is even one person who loves you unconditionally, everything will eventually be alright.

‘I ent got anythin’ left inside me,’ he would say repeatedly, for he felt that half of himself had been cut away, that life without Zach was only half a life and even that half was empty.

Well, I am devastated.

I remember reading this in the 6th and then 9th grades and I was traumatised by the way the mother treated the son, and how she left him and her newborn to die. D= Amazing book, but oh so depressing.
