So This Is Ever After is a really fun fantasy romcom romp and is perfect as a palette cleanser after a tough book because you need exactly 0 braincells to read it.

The plot, nor the characters are strongly written, and most of the story hinges on miscommunocation but it's sweet and a very fun, light read. I find it especially cute that everything Matt and Arek tried to plan to set Arek up with his friends, ended up happening to Matt and Arek instead.

This was cuteee! Glad I finally read it and even though the characters were oblivious and dumbasses for most of the book lol it was still a very good time :)

Okay so. I read In Deeper Waters first and was surprised by how much I enjoyed that, so I went in to this with high expectations. Plus it’s based on Arthurian legend which I love.

Unfortunately I was strongly debating stopping at a third of the way through. I cannot stand when modern language and slang are used in stories that are meant to be set in historical/medieval/etc time periods. And the way that the characters spoke made this book seem like it was lifted from a DND campaign or something similar with all of the ways the players might speak. It was just weird to me since this wasn’t an issue in In Deeper Water which is also set in an ambiguous historical fantasy world.

In a surprising turn of events, Arek and Matt’s secret crush plot line was what I enjoyed the most. I actually enjoy a good angst + misunderstanding plot and that was what kept me reading.

The book is clearly supposed to be simple, silly and fun.
The author doesn’t make a single attempt at believable wordbuilding. All the characters feel like laid back teens playing a role play game to goof around. They didn’t feel like part of the fantasy world at all.
For example when the king was addressed by a servant he answered with: „yeah sure what’s‘ up?“ 😂
They also have chocolate cake, know about pheromones and field trips and dozens of other things.
It feels a bit like an Alternative Universe Fanfiction of a show/book series with a sprinkle (or 5) of crack treated seriously, where the writer is just having fun with the characters.

I do like the concept of „what comes after the happy end“ stories (not that is was seriously explored in this story).

A cute, queer, dungeons and dragons-esque story with a disaster bisexual main character.
And every character is completely oblivious.

I don't really know how I feel about this book. Some of the things that bothered me are:
  1. The writing style was weird. It felt like it was written for an edgy thirteen year old boy, but the content felt too mature for that (lots of fucks, shits, and boners).
  2. I found descriptions of the environment to be lacking for the most part. It was rare we got a description, and I just wish there was a bit more floweriness to the writing.

I didn't get as annoyed with the characters' miscommunication because I read reviews before going into this book, so knowing to expect it helped a lot. That being said, it still got a bit frustrating after a point. Like, I wish there was more conflict that them not talking to each other (because let's be real, if Matt and Arek spoke to each other, the entire conflict would be solved).

Overall though, it was a super fun read. Very light hearted, which is nice if you need something as a break in between the heavier books out there (which is what I needed, so...). Plus the cover is just so beautiful, I refuse to not like this book.

I listened to a bit of the audiobook after finishing this (it didn't become available in time). The writing still fits the narrator of the audiobook really well, so if I ever reread this it'll probably be through audiobook.
