I’m so curious about that ending
as I interpreted it to be open ended. Does Mark’s call suggest she loses her resolve and stays for a man? I wanted closure damn it!

Tàr by way of Fleabag in the mode of Normal People - but bad.

Jena is a former child prodigy, one of the best violinists in the world, using vacuous and hardcore sex to fill the vicious void at the core of her being. Cyclical meditations on the interplay between genius, gender, race, and bodily autonomy set between Sydney and New York in 2016.

Found myself wanting a lot more from this. It engrossed me in the way that all self destructive female characters do, but was both obstructively obvious at some points and too vague in others. I really do have a soft spot for books set in Sydney though, and while it's usually nice to read literature by and about Asian women I do like that literature to be... good.

This might be to other people's t ste but I found it irritating and overindulgent. The main character has a lot of emotional trauma and is really annoying as a result - she's constantly doing cruel things to other people and then acting like it's not her fault because "well she's damaged". The people in her life seem bizarrely unkind and unhelpful and overall the whole story mostly left me unimpressed with the world created by the author.
