I read this last sequel with mostly teary eyes after the 50% mark. I loved this book so much because the characters really tug at my heartstrings.

The way in which Séverin didn’t need to sacrifice himself to become a god, yet remained a ‘god’ via his link to Laila. Speaking of, the parallel between the gods making life in the temple underneath Poveglia, and Laila and Severin gave me goosebumps. Their ending is truly magnificently written, and her recurring appearance in the dreams of the rest of the crew is extremely heartwarming. I couldn’t have thought of a better or more emotional ending. Their whole connection throughout the book really gives off the enemies to lovers tension perfectly.

Severin’s character growth is insane, and puts a good twist on the “history repeats itself” with him rebuilding a garden and aviary in Tristan’s memory, baking cakes and adopting the two Italian orphans.

Zofia and Enrique’s relationship developed beautifully, and I found that Zofia’s POVs were the most enjoyable to read because of her bravery and her logic devised from her thinking style. The dangers felt super realistic, and the island gave off super creepy vibes. Overall, a very well written and emotive book that really gets you to question whether you get to decide what love and protection should look like. How do you judge people based on how their actions look vs their intentions?

Enrique served as a constant good reminder of the value of history and authenticity, and his turn to teaching feels like such a healing finale for a young man who perpetually felt misunderstood.

I loved these characters enormously and will likely come back for a reread.
