Breakdown: Very standard YA, it really threw you into the plot of the book leaving plenty of room open for interpretation. but the magic system was fun and easy to understand. I did feel really sad when she very clearly made the wrong choice. But I loved all of the characters. They're all so unique and like-like. They talk like people in their positions would be expected to talk and they're all just doing their best. I was low-key hoping for some Red Queen vibes from it but it is surprisingly very different. Like, if you're looking, you can find similarities but other than that. This book was pretty good if you like this genre. However, we warned that if you don't tend to read this genre, you probably won't like this book.

Where to start?

I am the type of reader to finish a book in one sitting. Ash Princess isn’t one of those book. I had to take breaks. And I didn’t want to go back to it. I did because I wanted to finish it. For the review.

The characters are a shell. So shallow. Thora or Theo is the Shell Princess. Empty. Just going with the flow.

So is the whole plot. The world-building isn’t convincing. Things seem rushed and out of place.

There’s a love triangle but I didn’t see the « love » coming. Apparently, they fell in love overnight. Without any reason, other than a few words, looks. Really shallow, once again.

It was okay for entertainment, though I didn’t take much pleasure if I’m being honest. The writing style is good though, got nothing to say about that. It was nice to read (less to actually understand the story, as it wasn’t so great).

I don’t think I’ll read the other books of the series, maybe if I’m really bored some day.

3.5 Stars. I went in with pretty low expectations because I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy the abuse aspect of the story. And truthfully the plot is fairly paint by numbers for current YA fantasy trends. Still, the book was compulsively readable and I enjoyed the story more than I thought I would. I might even pick up the sequel.
