Could have been better written. Lots of telling, not showing. Took almost 2 months to read. Easy to put down.

Some extra scenes. But nothing that's really important. Since I've seen the movie before reading this book, I can't give it a perfect score. Even though the movie was a perfect 5/5.

Gosh, I wanted to like this book. I could not read it. I struggled to the end. There were too many big, fancy words that interrupted the flow of reading. Big, fancy words are lots of fun but really break up my focus when there is one every sentence. If you like lots of fancy words - I’m not judging you! It just wasn’t to my taste.

far far away from timothy zahn's thrawn trilogy or the good old tales of the bounty hunters

This was a pretty decent novelization. Having seen the movie first, I think it works a little better. The ending felt much more rushed than the rest of the story and put a bit of a damper on the emotions. I like reading novelizations to get more incite or explanation of motivations; however, THAT death scene was just sort of brushed aside. Other sections offered a nice view into characters minds and, for the most part, the author is able to effectively replicate the suspense and spectacle of the movie.

While I loved the movie, this novelization just doesn't capture any of the same magic. It never gripped me, which is probably why I took so long to read it. There were a couple of small revelations that weren't in the movie, so diehard completionists can at least find a little something. But I wouldn't recommend the book for anyone else.

I loved The Force Awakens. It was a great film, even if it left a few questions unanswered. Like how did Poe survive the crash and get off Jakku? Why did he suddenly decide that getting BB-8 back wasn't quite so important after all? How is it that Luke Skywalker is already a myth when his blowing up of the Death Star happened within the lifetimes of loads of people who are still alive? This book answers those questions. But that's about it.

It follows the same plot as the film, so it had the potential to be really good. But a lot of what made the film great just seemed to be lacking here. I didn't get any real sense of the emotions driving the characters. Rey was rather emotionless and cold (she actually considers selling BB-8 here, but only doesn't because she wants to stick it to Unkar Plutt), Finn is reduced to a series of one-liners, Kylo Ren is hardly there. It just read as a rather mechanical skeleton of the story that failed to capture the humour and heart of the film. If it hadn't been for the occasional titbits of information that hadn't been in the film, I don't know that I would have finished it.

This book was a great example of why I prefer to read books before seeing the film. They were almost exactly the same and therefore I really had a hard time maintaining my interest. I think I would’ve preferred it in graphic novel form.

interesting novelisation! A very 50/50 split of bland basic writing and writing that truly sparks your imagination. I wish it gave more of an insight into the characters thoughts and feelings - especially how Rey begins to use the force so quickly but a very good book to add to my Star Wars shelf! I Hope to annotate this book in the future which may make me appreciate it more.
