3 Stars.

I had forgotten I had even read this previously. I adored 'Deaf Republic' but none of Kaminsky's other works have seemed to scratch that same itch, lacking a lot of cohesion and focus. His poetry is delightful, but it did not resonate for me personally, again, in this instance.

"A refugee,
I go home and become a ghost
searching the houses I lived in."

A heartfelt and deeply personal collection of poems that paint a vivid picture, more than they tell the stories, of love and grief of a Jewish Ukrainian immigrant in America. I have loved Kaminsky's writing for some time now— i find it charming and poignant, sharing so much heart with such small words. As a Jewish immigrant myself I found a few of these to be so hard-hitting I had to pause and let myself sit with them for a while, and the ones to which I connected less I know could give someone with different experiences that same feeling.
